The leafy and affluent suburb of Karen sits to the South West of Nairobi towards the foot of the Ngong Hills. Karen still remains largely unspoilt by over-development or traffic jams and is an attractive and peaceful place to stay away from the city centre which is easily accessed via ever-improving ring roads and bypasses.

After a long journey, take a refreshing dip in the pool or wander through the calm oasis of the beautifully landscaped gardens to sit by the river. Airport transfers, game drives and excursions can also easily be arranged.

The cosy home, built initially as the private residence of the owner, is fully furnished with WiFi, back up generator guaranteeing 24/7 electricity supply, a solar heated swimming pool and fresh borehole water. Delicious freshly prepared breakfast, lunch and evening meals are available to all guests.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park covers an area of 117.21 square kilometres (28,963 acres) and is easily accessed from Karen via Magadi Road or Langata Road. The park hosts a wide and diverse wildlife population – it is common to see rhino, lion, and buffalo as well as large numbers of plains game, the park is home to up to 500 species of permanent and migratory birds.

David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant orphanage is situated just inside Nairobi National Park. Watching the baby elephants receive their 11am feed is always very popular. Anyone who ‘adopts’ a baby elephant can also visit in the late afternoon to watch the orphans being given their supper and put to bed. The orphanage is off the Langata road and around a 20 minute drive from Karen Gables.

AFEW Giraffe Centre

The nearby AFEW Giraffe Centre offers the amazing opportunity to hand feed the beautiful resident Rothschild's giraffe. The Giraffe Centre has become world-famous as a Nature Education Centre, educating thousands of Kenyan school children every year as well as playing host to a huge number of international guests who delight in learning about these gentle giants at close quarters.

Karen Blixen House

The farm that the Danish author, of the famed memoir Out of Africa, lived on from 1917 to 1931 is now a fascinating and intimate museum. Much of the 1985 Oscar-winning movie adaptation was shot on the grounds. A tour of Bogani House (now owned by the National Museums of Kenya) is a moving experience, in one corner is a lantern that Blixen hung on her veranda to let her ill-fated lover, English hunter Denys Finch Hatton, know she was home, and his monogrammed books still line the shelves. Ndege Road was originally Denys Finch-Hatton's landing strip.
